What is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a small gland found only in men, located just below the bladder. Prostate cancer happens when cells in the prostate grow in an uncontrolled way.

It’s the most common cancer in men in the UK. While some prostate cancers grow very slowly, others can be more aggressive. Catching it early often means simpler treatments and a better outcome.

Check Your Risk

1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer. Find out if you have a higher risk based on clinical guidelines in just 30 seconds.

Question 1 of 3

How old are you?

Age is the most common risk factor. The risk significantly increases as you get older.

Question 2 of 3

Has your father or brother had prostate cancer?

Having a close relative with prostate or breast cancer increases your own risk profile.

Question 3 of 3

Black men are more at risk of prostate cancer. Do you have Black or mixed Black ethnicity?

Black men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men, often at a younger age.

You may have a higher risk.

Because of your answers, clinical guidelines suggest you should consider having a prostate assessment and PSA blood test.

Your risk is currently lower.

Based on your answers, you don't have the main risk factors. However, if you have urinary symptoms or concerns, you should still get checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about prostate assessments, PSA testing, and understanding your results with Clove Health.

What is a PSA test?
A PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test is a simple blood test that measures the level of PSA in your blood. PSA is a protein made by the prostate gland. Raised levels can be an early indicator of prostate issues, including cancer, though they can also be caused by benign conditions like an enlarged prostate.
Do I need a digital rectal exam (DRE)?
Not always. Your assessment begins with a detailed medical questionnaire and a PSA blood test. A physical examination (DRE) is only performed by the doctor if it is clinically indicated based on your symptoms or blood test results, and always with your full consent.
What if my PSA level is raised?
A raised PSA does not automatically mean you have prostate cancer. Common causes include urinary tract infections, vigorous exercise, or a naturally enlarged prostate. If your level is high, our doctors will discuss the results with you and arrange a repeat test or an immediate referral if necessary.
How long do results take?
Your blood samples are processed quickly by our partner laboratories. We typically receive your PSA results within 48 to 72 hours. Your doctor will review them and share a comprehensive health report with you shortly after.
Can I get tested if I have no symptoms?
Yes. Prostate cancer often develops slowly and may not cause any symptoms in its early stages. If you are over 50, or over 45 with a family history or Black African/Caribbean heritage, proactive screening is highly recommended.
Is the assessment confidential?
Absolutely. Your health information, test results, and consultation details are entirely confidential. We adhere to strict data protection guidelines and will only share your information with your NHS GP if you explicitly ask us to do so.
What should I do before a PSA test?
Certain activities can temporarily raise your PSA levels. We advise that you avoid vigorous exercise (especially cycling) and sexual activity for 48 hours before your blood test to ensure the most accurate result possible.
If I need treatment, what happens next?
If your results indicate that further investigation or treatment is required, our doctors will provide a clear, expedited referral. You can choose to be referred back into the NHS system, or we can connect you directly with leading private specialists.
Is the £149 fee inclusive of everything?
Yes, the £149 fee covers the initial screening questionnaire, your PSA blood test, the doctor consultation to review your results, and the generation of your personal Prostate Health Report.
How frequently should I be tested?
This depends entirely on your initial baseline results, age, and individual risk factors. Your doctor will provide personalized guidance in your health report, but many men opt for an annual or biennial check for peace of mind.
