Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about HRT safety, treatment options, and your menopause journey with Clove Health.

Is HRT safe?
For the vast majority of women under 60, the benefits of HRT (protecting bones and heart, relieving symptoms) far outweigh the risks. We use body-identical hormones which have a superior safety profile compared to older types.
Will I gain weight?
This is a common myth. The menopause transition itself often causes a metabolism slow-down and weight redistribution. HRT can actually help manage weight by restoring energy levels, allowing you to exercise and sleep better.
What are 'body-identical hormones'?
Body-identical hormones (BHRT) are chemically identical to the hormones your body produces naturally. Derived from plant sources (yams), they have a superior safety and side-effect profile compared to older, synthetic types.
Can I take Testosterone?
Yes. Women produce testosterone naturally, and levels drop during menopause. If you experience low libido, brain fog, or fatigue despite being on Oestrogen, we can discuss adding Testosterone to your plan.
How long will I need to take HRT?
There is no set time limit. Many women take it long-term to manage symptoms and protect bone density. We review your treatment annually, and you can continue for as long as the benefits outweigh the risks for you.
Will HRT increase breast cancer risk?
For most, the small increased risk with combined HRT is lower than the risk associated with being overweight or drinking alcohol. If you use Oestrogen-only HRT (post-hysterectomy), this risk is not increased.
What if I've had a hysterectomy?
If you no longer have a uterus, you typically only need Oestrogen. This simplifies treatment and removes the need for Progestogen, which further reduces the small risks associated with combined therapy.
I'm still having periods, can I start?
Yes. If your periods are irregular or you have symptoms, we can start HRT. We typically use a cyclical regimen (where you still have a monthly bleed) until your periods naturally stop.
I'm worried about bleeding on HRT.
Spotting is common in the first 3-6 months as your body adjusts. If you experience heavy or persistent bleeding, we will investigate this immediately to rule out any other underlying causes.
What type of HRT is best for me?
The "best" HRT is the one that manages your symptoms with the fewest side effects. This depends on your medical history and preferences (gels, patches, or tablets). We create a bespoke plan for every patient.
