The UK's First GLP-1 Weight Loss Tablet: Why Medicine Requires Movement

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recently made headlines with the approval of the first daily GLP-1 tablet for weight management in the UK.

From a clinical standpoint, this is a monumental step forward. Currently, the most effective medicines for weight management require self-administered injections. This daily oral tablet removes that barrier for anyone who was previously put off, offering a more accessible alternative for patients struggling with weight loss resistance.

Having dedicated over a decade to high-level physical training, coaching others along the way, and now stepping into my role as a qualified Personal Trainer at Clove, I feel there is a need to address a critical misconception: Medication is a tool - it is an adjunct to support weight loss, and shouldn’t be used as a standalone treatment.

“Taking a GLP-1 medication on its own and not changing how you live your life is simply not enough for long-term sustainability, and is putting your long-term health at serious risk. For the weight loss to be long term, taking the medication must be paired with actively protecting your metabolism.”

The medication is highly effective at reducing your appetite, but it cannot do the physical work for you. This means moving beyond simply eating less. You need a clear plan that ensures you are eating enough protein to keep your body nourished, alongside regular strength training to protect your muscles and bones. Without these physical changes, the tablet is only a temporary fix, not a sustainable change.

The Hidden Danger of Unassisted Weight Loss

GLP-1 medications suppress appetite and slow down how quickly food leaves your stomach (gastric emptying) exceptionally well. Because you feel fuller for longer, you eat significantly less, which naturally results in weight loss over time. However, extreme weight regain often occurs the moment patients stop taking weight loss medications. They have essentially slowed their metabolism.

The Clove Health Philosophy: Medicine and Movement

At Clove Health, our core philosophy is simple: Live Better, Live Longer. Living longer is achieved by reducing your body fat percentage and lowering your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, to live better, one needs more than just a lower number on the scale; it demands physical strength, bone density, and functional capability.

You need robust bones for injury protection and the capacity to handle daily life—whether that involves lifting groceries, shifting heavy objects, or staying active with your children. Ultimately, a strong body is an empowered, capable body.

The reason Dr Mirab and I founded this clinic was due to a recurring observation: patients were receiving prescriptions for weight loss treatments, yet they lacked any nutritional or physical roadmap for support. We recognised that medical intervention and lifestyle coaching must work in tandem to reach optimum health.

Within our clinic, obtaining a prescription is merely the first step of the protocol for those who qualify for medical weight management.

How We Do It Differently

When you undertake a medical weight management programme with Clove Health, you do not just get a prescription in the post. You get a complete, integrated framework:

  • Clinical Oversight Our doctors oversee your blood testing, ensure the medication is clinically appropriate, and monitor your internal health markers throughout the process.
  • Nutritional Strategy Our dedicated Health and Nutrition Coach works with you to ensure that the calories you do consume prioritise high-quality protein to protect and retain your lean tissue.
  • Strength & Metabolism Coaching I design a bespoke resistance training protocol. My approach uses progressive overload to provide the essential physical stimulus your body needs to actively preserve and protect your muscle tissue while losing weight.

The Bottom Line

The GLP-1 tablet reduces barriers to achieving sustainable weight loss. With its recent approval, it has the potential to truly change lives. However, medication is most effective when combined with long-term lifestyle changes, as relying on a tablet alone may overlook the broader support needed for sustainable health.

Achieving sustainable and lifelong health is a rewarding journey. By integrating medical support with tailored strength and nutritional protocols, you can effectively optimise your metabolism and build a strong foundation for long-term well-being.

We are here to guide you on your journey if you are seeking medical weight management that is conducted correctly, without haste, and backed by comprehensive multidisciplinary support.
